On monday I went on a really quick trip to Melbourne for the XMENTORS workshop run by Rocco Ancora & Nick Ghionis. I am a great believer in continued professional development and love to make to workshops when I can. The focus of this workshop was lighting (both available light & artifical light) and gentle direction techniques and the great thing was that we not only got to see Rocco & Nick in action but were also able to shoot ourselves.
The workshop started off by using window light in the studio

and then using different video lights

We then headed outdoors (in the bright early afternoon sun) where Rocco & Nick used the new Ranger Quatra Flash System (my images were taken using available light)

and my shot

the heat drove us back inside where we returned to using window light

Rocco showed us how to use reflections to make more interesting images (in the second image you can see the easel that held a picture that gave the reflection in the first image)

and Nick demonstrated how to set up the bride and groom for a cafe style shot and other gentle direction ideas

I have to say a huge thanks to the models on the day, I don’t know how they manage to do it in front of so many cameras!

One last image where Nick & Rocco demonstrate how to use a sofa as a prop

I had a great time at this workshop and came away feeling really inspired. Watch out as you will be seeing me pull out my video lights a lot more often!

Sam@Shuttersnap - Really like the first three pics of the red-haired girl outside. Can’t wait to hear more about the workshop!
sharifa Ghionis - wow … fantastic images
Rocco Ancora - It was great to see you at the workshop. Nick and myself had an awesome day sharing our lighting and posing (directing) techniques.
The images you took on the day are awesome. Well done and we look forward in seeing you at future workshops.
